Dr. Crawford attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Ky., for his medical degree. He was a pioneer in robotic surgery starting in 2002 and built the robotics curriculum for resident physicians at University of Illinois in Peoria starting in 2004.

Dr. Crawford completed his fellowship in minimally invasive surgery when it was brand new in 1998.
