About Varicose Veins

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are most commonly found in the legs. They occur when the valves in your veins stop working properly. This allows blood to flow backward and pool causing the veins to stretch and bulge.  Often times, varicose veins can be more than a cosmetic issue and can lead to pain in your legs.

They may appear as:

  • Blue or purple bulging cords just under the surface of the skin

  • Sometimes surrounded by spider veins (small, red or blue networks of veins)

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins. Risk factors include:

  • Age – Vein valves naturally weaken over time

  • Genetics – Family history increases your chances

  • Hormonal changes – Pregnancy, menopause or birth control use

  • Obesity – Extra pressure on the veins

  • Inactivity – Sitting or standing for long hours without movement

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

While some people have no symptoms, varicose veins can cause:

  • Aching or heavy legs

  • Throbbing, burning or cramping in the legs

  • Swelling in the lower legs or ankles

  • Itching around the veins

  • Skin discoloration or changes in texture (in advanced cases)

These symptoms often worsen after standing or sitting for long periods and may improve with leg elevation or movement.

Why Seek Treatment?

Beyond cosmetic concerns, in some cases, varicose veins can progress to more serious problems, such as:

  • Leg symptoms affecting quality of life

  • Chronic skin changes (redness, poor skin integrity) which can predispose to ulcers (in advanced stages)

  • Blood clots (superficial thrombophlebitis or deep vein thrombosis)
