Springfield Clinic’s Interventional Pain Management Department is welcoming a new member to their team this month.
Dylan Afeld, MD, grew up in Springfield and was excited to return home to start his medical practice. He completed his medical degree, residency in anesthesiology and fellowship in pain medicine at University of Illinois College of Medicine. “I knew I wanted to return to Springfield to establish my medical practice because of my comfort level with the region and desire to serve my hometown,” he says. “My aim is to help reduce pain and improve function with the overall goal of an increased quality of life.”
Dr. Afeld was pre-med in college but knew with certainty he wanted to be a doctor when he worked as an emergency technician for a year. “It was the positive experience of working with patients in the emergency department that solidified my dream of becoming a physician. I really enjoy building positive relationships with my patients and seeing the impact that the multidisciplinary approach to pain management can have on their lives.”
Building these positive relationships with patients is Dr. Afeld’s goal for his practice. He did his residency training in anesthesiology because he was drawn to the opportunity for hands-on patient care that specialty provides. “I then became interested in interventional pain management because I enjoyed helping to improve patients’ quality of life through their pain relief and valued the close relationships you can build with your patients over time.”
Dr. Afeld treats all forms of chronic pain that have failed basic treatments. His practice uses a multidisciplinary approach to pain management that includes minimally invasive outpatient pain procedures, non-opioid-based medications, physical rehabilitation and behavioral counseling. He will be located at Springfield Clinic 1st – 800 Building at 800 North 1st Street. Springfield Clinic Interventional Pain Management provides care for patients suffering from chronic pain through an evidence-based, multidisciplinary model.
