Can I use sick leave for doctor's appointments?
Yes, sick leave can be used for a doctor's appointment. You should
request this time away from work with your manager or director
and should give your manager as much notice as possible that
you have an appointment.
Am I required to bring a doctor's note when I take sick leave?
Several of our managers and directors may require staff to bring
in a doctor's note to verify the necessity of the absence.
Am I eligible for Family Medical Leave?
An employee is eligible for Family Medical Leave (FMLA) if employed
for at least 12 months, and has worked at least 1,250 hours during
the previous 12-month period. The leave must be certified by
a physician and must be for special family or personal health
reasons. If you take FMLA time for a personal health condition,
you will be required to obtain a doctor's note allowing you to
return to work.
How much time can I take under FMLA?
Eligible employees can take job-protected FMLA leave for a maximum
of 12 work weeks in a rolling 12-month period, which is defined
as a 12-month period looking forward from the first day of the
leave. If you use 12 weeks of FMLA, your job is no longer protected
after that point. In some circumstances, the leave may be able
to be extended depending on the needs of your department, the
nature of your illness/injury and the additional time needed.
This is not a guarantee, however, and you will need to work with
your manager and the Human Resources Department to identify options
available to you.
