When Should I go to the Emergency Room?

Certain medical conditions should always be treated in the Emergency Room. If you think you are having a stroke or a heart attack, you should call 911 immediately

Signs of a heart attack or stroke include:

  • Chest pain or heaviness
    • Possibly with: heart racing/fluttering, shortness of breath, nausea, arm/jaw pain, severe indigestion
  • Numbness or weakness in part of body or face
    • Possibly with: slurred speech, dizziness, confusion

Conditions NOT TREATED in Prompt Care include:

  • dehydration
  • miscarriage
  • seizures
  • depression/anxiety
  • infants with fever greater than 101˚ who are less than two months old
  • children with burns on their palms or feet
  • violent assault
  • post operative complications
  • pregnancy complications

These conditions require a higher level of care and should be seen in the Emergency Room.

We understand that it may be difficult to determine where the most appropriate place for care may be for your specific symptoms. If you are unsure, contact your Personal Care Physician’s office or TeleNurse for additional guidance.
