In honor of this important health month, Windie McKay, DC, has a list of tips that can save you a sore neck, back, and wallet!
- Use ice for acute pain – never use heat unless suggested by a Chiropractor.
- Do not sleep on your stomach. Sleep on your side or on your back.
- Place your computer directly in front of you and not to one side of your desk. You do not want to have your head turned in one position all day long.
- Keep your heel height below one inch. High heels can worsen low back pain.
- When picking objects from the floor, use your legs and lift straight up. Hold the object close to the body.
- Do not carry a heavy purse or bag on only one side of your body. Decrease the amount of items in your bags and frequently change shoulders.
- Take frequent breaks at work if you have a computer based job. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can worsen low back pain.
- Drink more water. Dehydration can cause headaches.
- Cut down on caffeine.
- Stop smoking.
- Eat healthy and exercise at least 20 minutes per day.
- Consider regular massage therapy appointments.
- Deep breathing can reduce pain.
- Good posture can prevent lumbar pain.
- Decreased ranges of motion may indicate you need to see a Chiropractor.
