The 2006-2009 construction and renovation of Springfield Clinic's Main Campus represents the fourth expansion of the facility since its original construction on the site in 1952. The project was designed by BSA LifeStructures, an architectural and design firm from Indianapolis, Indiana. Harold O'Shea Builders of Springfield, Illinois served as general contractor.
The project was completed at an estimated cost of $40 million and included the relocation of a major city sewer line, the complete renovation and remodeling of the East Building, the construction of the 4-story, 115,000 square foot West Building and the improvement to more than eight acres of surrounding parking and landscaping.
O'Shea Builders provided these fascinating facts:
- 12,000 sheets of drywall were used --- enough to build an average of 40 new homes
- 98,000 bricks were used --- laid end to end, they would span 18 miles
- 2500 yards of concrete was poured --- the equivalent of a sidewalk six miles long
- Sixteen trades were involved in the construction --- and took about 90,000 man hours
- There were as many workers ON THE JOB at one time as there are members in the Illinois House of Representatives
